You formed me as a good citizen

It was a unique opportunity in my life. My congregation allowed me to participate in a Social Analysis workshop conducted by IDEAS, Madurai, from January 29 to February 3, 2026. When I was permitted to attend, I knew that this workshop would help me to be effective in my evangelisation, prison and youth ministry. I enthusiastically participated in this workshop.

We were about 25 participants, women and men from varied walks of life. The icebreaker exercise conducted in the beginning helped me to understand others and relate to them warmly. The second day was thrilling. Five women from grassroot level shared their experiences with clarity and precision. This sharing helped me to understand the struggles of ordinary people. I was deeply moved, and I felt something was happening in me which I find it difficult to articulate.  I also felt spontaneously that I must do something for society.

Fr. Michaelraj, the organiser of the workshop, helped us to understand the deeper dimensions of society, economics, politics, culture, environment and media. He also helped us to reflect and connect our thoughts with the experiences of ordinary people. We were guided to dialogue with one another on what was going on in our minds from our personal experiences. We were helped to read appropriate books. We spent the entire day reflecting, dialoguing and raising questions.

In the following days, thematic experts shared their thoughts on different aspects of society. As we were well prepared, we raised meaningful questions to them. This dialogue helped to delve deeper into different aspects of society. I understood the kind of society we live in and my possible role. I realized the importance of the Constitution of India, and effectively using the same would be the right way of proceeding in my future engagements.

I deeply felt that our society is becoming a slave to foreign goods and consumerism; nature is exploited and overused; we are divided based on religion and caste; the youth are addicted to drugs and alcohol. In this context, we are called to build a democratic, pluralistic and just society guided by the Constitution of India. I felt this must be my primary mission. I need to incorporate this in whatever I do.

My stay at IDEAS was memorable. I read and reflected. I was moved by sharing of experiences. I was provided with healthy food. There was safety for women and the ambience was good. There was freedom of expression, even to share silly thoughts. Bonding with one another with due respect was amazing. My old thoughts were challenged, and I developed new perspectives. Thanks to IDEAS for forming me as a good human being and citizen.
