My name is Ms. Veerammal and I am the leader of my village Sangam at Kattakulam, Vadipatti block, Madurai district. Our hamlet, with 60 families, was deprived of drainage, a common toilet and bathing tub, and a drinking water facility. Trained by the Sangam staff we submitted petitions in various Gram Sabha meetings, but without any success. We reported the matter to the leaders of the Tamil Nadu Labourers’ Rights Federation. With their help, we again approached the President of the panchayat. The President listened to us. Realizing that women are emerging as a force, he considered our demands favourably and now we have proper drainage, a common toilet, and a bathing tub. I realize that it is important to work on our basic needs persistently. Continuous dialogue and demonstration of women’s power can bring changes.

Ms. Venila resides at E. Kallupati, Oddanchattiram block, Dindigul district. About 50 families are in this hamlet. A common drinking water tub was built in the caste people’s housing area. Often, we could not draw drinking water. During festivals, the scenario was bad. The caste people utilize the water fully and we had difficulties in drawing drinking water. We reported the matter to the President. After repeated submission of petitions in Gram Sabha meetings, the President yielded to our demand and constructed a separate drinking water tub in our area. Now all the families are happy, and they are grateful to the Sangam for their determined efforts. This is my first success. I hope to bring more joy to my village community.

என்னுடைய பெயர் வீரம்மாள். மதுரை மாவட்டம், வாடிப்பட்டி தாலுகா, கட்டகுளம் கிராமத்தின் கிளைச்சங்க தலைவராக இருக்கிறேன். எங்கள் கிராமத்தில் 60 குடும்பங்கள் வசித்து வருகின்றோம். எங்கள் கிராமத்தில் சாக்கடை வசதி, பொது கழிப்பறை, குளியல் தொட்டி மற்றும் குடி தண்ணீர் குழாய் போன்ற எந்தவொரு அடிப்படை வசதியும் இல்லை. அடிப்படை தேவைகளுக்காக சங்கத்தின் மூலம் பயிற்சிகள் பெற்ற நாங்கள் பல கிராமசபைக் கூட்டங்களில் பங்கேற்று மனுக்கள் அளித்தும் பலன் ஏதும் இல்லை. இப்பிரச்சனை குறித்து சங்கத்தின் உதவியுடன் மீண்டும் பஞ்சாயத்து தலைவரை அணுகினோம். பெண்கள் இயக்கமாக உருவாகிவருவதை உணர்ந்த அவர், எங்களது கோரிக்கைகளை பரிசீலித்து தற்போது சாக்கடை வசதி, பொது கழிப்பறை, குளியல் தொட்டி போன்றவற்றை செய்து கொடுத்துள்ளார். இந்த வெற்றியின் மூலம் நமது அடிப்படை தேவைகளுக்காக தொடர்ந்து போராட வேண்டும் என்பதை உணர்ந்து கொண்டேன். தொடர்ச்சியான போராட்டங்கள் மற்றும் பெண்களின் சக்தியை ஒருங்கிணைப்பதன் மூலம் பெரிய மாற்றங்களை கொண்டு வரமுடியும்.

நான் வெண்ணிலா, திண்டுக்கல் மாவட்டம், ஒட்டன்சத்திரம் தாலுகா, இ.கல்லுப்பட்டி கிராமத்தில் வசித்து வருகிறேன். எங்கள் கிராமத்தில் சுமார் 50 குடும்பங்கள் வாழ்ந்து வருகிறோம். இங்கு குடிநீர் தொட்டியானது ஆதிக்கச்சாதியினர் வசிக்கும் பகுதியில் தான் இருக்கிறது. அதனால் எங்களால் தேவைப்படும் நேரங்களில் தண்ணீர் எடுக்க முடியாது. திருவிழா, விசேஷ காலங்களில் இந்தநிலை இன்னும் மோசமாக இருக்கும். ஆதிக்கச்சாதி மக்கள் தங்களுக்கு தேவையான தண்ணீர் எடுத்த பிறகுதான் நாங்கள் எடுக்க முடியும். இப்பிரச்சனை குறித்து பஞ்சாயத்து தலைவரிடம் முறையிட்டோம். கிராமசபைக் கூட்டங்களிலும் பலமுறை கலந்து கொண்டு மனு அளித்தோம். அதன்பிறகு எங்;கள் பகுதியிலே குடிநீர் தொட்டி பஞ்சாயத்து தலைவர் கட்டித் தந்தார். சங்கத்தின் வழிகாட்டுதலினால் குடிநீர் தொட்டி கிடைத்ததால் மக்கள் மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் இருக்கின்றனர். எனது பணி வாழ்வில் இது முதல் வெற்றியாகும். எனது பணியின் மூலம் கிராமத்திற்கு இதுபோன்ற மகிழ்ச்சியை, அடிப்படை தேவைகளை பெற்று தருவேன் என்று நம்புகிறேன்.
