I am Vidya, aged 29 residing at Vandal Nagar, near Thiruppuvanam about 25 KM from Madurai. I am married and have 2 children and I belong to Kal Oddar community. My husband is a daily wage labourer. I completed the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) and now I am pursuing MA in Tamil. In my locality, 53 Kal Oddar families are living. The families are engaged in selling sleeping mats prepared out of cordgrass, weaving bamboo baskets and selling play materials during festivals to earn their living.

I remember my childhood experiences vividly. “When I was 10, my father was imprisoned by the police on suspicion. This was not an isolated case. My community was branded as a criminal tribe, and under some pretext without any evidence, the police were randomly filing cases against our community members and imprisoned many. My mother protected and nurtured my 3 sisters and me, by hiding us in different places. Once, when my father returned from prison, he showed us the wounds on his body. I cried. He also said that we could not demand justice from the police for arbitrarily arresting our community members as we were illiterate. This thought was my motivation to study and complete my graduation. Even after my studies, I could not get a job.

Three years ago, Madurai IDEAS initiated an evening study centre in my hamlet. When they looked for a teacher, my community members suggested my name. I was asked to teach our children. I loved this assignment as I can demonstrate my experience as a model to the children and show them a bright future.”

Our Kal Oddar children in the last 2 years participated in the book exhibition organized at the district level and received prizes from the Sivaganga District Collector. This was a big morale booster for the children. Mr. Arockiasamy, the Headmaster of a nearby government school asked me to take a model class for Class 5-8 children. Looking at my teaching skills, he appointed me for 2 months to serve as a teacher in that school. When the Sivaganga District Education Officer heard this news, the officer called me and publicly appreciated my teaching. My community members felt so proud of this recognition. I believe that only education will give us a new identity, and help us to get rid of criminal tribe labelling.

கல்வியால் மட்டுமே ஒரு புதிய அடையாளத்தை கொடுக்க முடியும்!

சிவகங்கை மாவட்டம், திருப்புவனம் வண்டல் நகர் பகுதியில் வசித்துவரும் என் பெயர் வித்யா, வயது 29. கல் ஓட்டர் சமூகத்தைச் சேர்ந்த எனக்கு திருமணமாகி 2 குழந்தைகள் உள்ளனர். என் கணவர் தினக்கூலியாக கிடைக்கின்ற வேலையை செய்து வருகிறார். நான் பி.ஏ.பி.எட். முடித்து விட்டு தற்போது எம்.ஏ. தமிழ் மேற்படிப்பு படித்து கொண்டிருக்கிறேன். எங்கள் பகுதியில் 53 கல் ஓட்டர் குடும்பங்கள் வசித்து வருகிறோம். மக்கள் அனைவரும் கோரை புல்லில் பாய் பின்னி விற்பது, மூங்கில் கூடை பின்னுவது, திருவிழா காலங்களில் விளையாட்டுப் பொருட்கள் விற்பனை செய்வது போன்றவற்றை நம்பி தங்கள் வாழ்வாதாரத்தை நடத்தி வருகின்றனர்.
எனது சிறுவயதில் நடந்த நிகழ்வு எனது நினைவில் இருக்கின்றது. அப்போது எனக்கு வயது 10. எனது தந்தையை சந்தேகத்தின் பேரில் காவல்துறையினர் சிறையில் அடைத்தனர். இது ஒரு தனிநபர் மீதான வழக்கு அல்ல. எங்கள் சமூகம் குற்றப்; பழங்குடியினர் என முத்திரை குத்தப்பட்டதினால், எந்த ஆதாரமும் இல்லாமல் ஏதாவது ஒரு காரணத்தை சொல்லி காவல்துறையினர் எங்கள் மக்கள் மீது வழக்குகளை பதிவு செய்து சிறையில் அடைத்து வந்தனர். என்னையும் எனது 3 சகோதரிகளையும் எனது அம்மா எங்களை பாதுகாக்கும் நோக்குடன் வெவ்வேறு இடங்களில் மறைத்து வைத்து வளர்த்தார்கள். எனது அப்பா சிறையில் இருந்து திரும்பி வந்தபோது, காவல்துறையினர் அவரை அடித்தபோது உடம்பில் ஏற்பட்ட காயங்களை காட்டினார். அந்த காயங்களை பார்த்து நான் அழுதேன். நாம் “இந்த சாதியிலே பிறந்ததினாலும், கல்வியறிவு இல்லாத காரணத்தினாலும்” காவல்துறையினர் நம் மீது பொய் வழக்கு போடும்போது அவர்களை எதிர்த்து கேட்க முடியவில்லை என்று எனது தந்தை கூறினார். கல்வியின் முக்கியத்துவம் குறித்த எனது தந்தையின் இந்த வார்த்தை தான் என்னை கல்லூரி மேற்படிப்பு முடிக்க ஊக்கப்படுத்தியது. படிப்பை முடித்த பிறகு எனக்கு எந்த வேலையும் கிடைக்கவில்லை.
மூன்று வருடங்களுக்கு முன்னர் அய்டியாஸ் நிறுவனம் எங்கள் பகுதியில் மாலை நேர கல்வி மையம் ஆரம்பிப்பதற்கானப் பணிகளை மேற்கொண்டார்கள். அப்போது மையத்திற்கான ஆசிரியரை தேடி கொண்டிருக்கும்போது, எனது சமூக மக்கள் என் பெயரை பரிந்துரை செய்தார்கள். எனது அனுபவத்தை பிள்ளைகளுக்கு முன்மாதிரியாக காட்டவும், அதன்மூலம் அவர்களுக்கு பிரகாசமான எதிர்காலத்தையும் என்னால் உருவாக்க முடியும் என்ற நம்பிக்கையில் இந்த வேலையை நான் விரும்பி எற்றுக் கொண்டேன்.
கடந்த 2 வருடங்களாக எங்களது கல் ஓட்டர் குழந்தைகள் மாவட்ட அளவிலான புத்தகக் கண்காட்சியில் பங்கேற்பு செய்து சிவகங்கை மாவட்ட ஆட்சியரிடமிருந்து சிறப்பு பரிசுகளை பெற்று வருகின்றனர். இது நமது குழந்தைகளுக்கு மிகப்பெரிய உந்துசக்தியாக இருக்கிறது. நாங்கள் வாழும் பகுதிக்கு அருகிலிருக்கும் அரசு மேல்நிலைப்பள்ளியின் தலைமையாசிரியர் திரு. ஆரோக்கியசாமி அவர்கள் என்னை 5-முதல் 8-ம் வகுப்பு வரையிலான குழந்தைகளுக்கு மாதிரி வகுப்பு எடுக்கச் சொன்னார். நான் பாடம் நடத்தும் முறையை பார்த்து அவர் என்னை 2 மாதங்கள் தற்காலிக ஆசிரியராக பணியமர்த்தினார். இந்த செய்தியை கேள்விப்பட்ட சிவகங்கை மாவட்ட கல்வி அதிகாரி என்னை அழைத்து பாராட்டினார். பொதுவெளியில் வைத்து என்னை பாராட்டியதால், எனக்கு கிடைத்த அங்கீகாரத்தை பார்த்த எனது சமூக மக்கள் மிகுந்த பெருமிதம் கொண்டனர். “கல்வியால் மட்டுமே எங்களுக்கு ஒரு புதிய அடையாளத்தையும், குற்றப்பழங்குடியினர் என்ற முத்திரையையும் மாற்ற முடியும்” என்று முழுமையாக நம்புகிறேன்.
