“I am Kaleeswari, working as a manual scavenging worker at Poolangal panchayat, Viruthunagar district. My husband, Kumaravel, was also working as a scavenger. We have two children. I regularly attend the training sessions organised by the Madurai Legal Awareness Coordination Committee (MLACC). We were taught about the importance of the Service Register, medical insurance and group insurance, along with other entitlement schemes available for scavenging workers.

My husband suddenly died of health issues a few months ago. I approached the MLACC to help me claim the group insurance. Under their guidance, I submitted all the necessary documents, the death certificate, the legal heir certificate and my bank account to the relevant authorities. In about 4 months, I received the group insurance compensation of Rs 5,00,000. With this amount, I cleared my debts and am educating my children. I thank MLACC. I will speak about this to my colleagues and bring them to MLACC training sessions.”

Ramalakshmi, another scavenging worker from the same district, stated, “I have learnt about my rights and entitlements by participating in various training sessions. I am happy to say that I am supporting and guiding many scavenging workers. Because of my efforts, many workers are joining our union. As I am a bit educated, I feel that I can help my colleagues to approach the officials and submit petitions for various needs. I can make a difference in the lives of many workers due to the training I received from MLACC. I realise that this is my call. I am committed to strengthening our Sangam.”

“நான் காளீஸ்வரி, விருதுநகர் மாவட்டம், பூலாங்கல் பஞ்சாயத்தில் துப்புரவு பணியாளராக  பணிபுரிகிறேன். என் கணவர் குமரவேலுவும் துப்புரவு பணியாளராக பணியாற்றி வந்தார். எங்களுக்கு இரண்டு குழந்தைகள் உள்ளனர். மதுரை சட்ட விழிப்புணர்வு ஒருங்கிணைப்பு குழு (MLACC) ஏற்பாடு செய்யும் அனைத்து பயிற்சி அமர்வுகளில் நான் தவறாமல் பங்கேற்பேன். துப்புரவு பணியாளர்களுக்கு கிடைக்கும் பிற உரிமைத் திட்டங்களுடன் பணிப் பதிவேடு, மருத்துவக் காப்பீடு மற்றும் குழு காப்பீட்டின் முக்கியத்துவம் குறித்து எங்களுக்குக் கற்பிக்கப்பட்டது.

சில மாதங்களுக்கு முன்பு என் கணவர் திடீரென உடல்நலக் குறைவால் இறந்துவிட்டார். குழு காப்பீட்டைப் பெற எனக்கு உதவ சட்ட விழிப்புணர்வு ஒருங்கிணைப்பு குழுவை அணுகினேன். அவர்களின் வழிகாட்டுதலின் கீழ், தேவையான அனைத்து ஆவணங்கள், இறப்புச் சான்றிதழ், சட்டப்பூர்வ வாரிசுச் சான்றிதழ் மற்றும் எனது வங்கிக் கணக்கை போன்றவற்றை சம்பந்தப்பட்ட அதிகாரிகளிடம் சமர்ப்பித்தேன். சுமார் 4 மாதங்களில், ரூ.5,00,000 குழு காப்பீட்டு இழப்பீட்டைப் பெற்றேன். இந்தத் தொகையின் மூலம் எனது கடன்களை அடைத்தும், எனது குழந்தைகளுக்கான கல்வி கற்கும் மற்றும் பராமரிப்பு செலவுகளையும் செய்ய முடிந்தது.  சட்ட விழிப்புணர்வு ஒருங்கிணைப்பு குழுவிற்கு என் நன்றி தெரிவித்து கொள்கிறேன். இதைப் பற்றி என் சக பணியாளர்களிடம் பேசி அவர்களை சட்ட விழிப்புணர்வு ஒருங்கிணைப்பு குழு ஏற்பாடு செய்யும் பயிற்சி அமர்வுகளுக்கு அழைத்துச் செல்வேன்.”

அதே மாவட்டத்தைச் சேர்ந்த மற்றொரு துப்புரவுத் தொழிலாளி ராமலட்சுமி கூறுகையில், “பல்வேறு பயிற்சி அமர்வுகளில் பங்கேற்பதன் வாயிலாக எனது உரிமைகள் மற்றும் அதை எவ்வாறு பெற வேண்டும் என்பதையும் நான் கற்றுக்கொண்டேன். பல துப்புரவு பணியாளர்களை  ஒருங்கிணைத்து  வழிநடத்தும் போது மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் செய்கிறேன். . எனது முயற்சிகளால், பல தொழிலாளர்கள் எங்கள் தொழிற்சங்கத்தில் இணைந்திருக்கிறார்கள். நான் சிறிது கல்வியறிவு பெற்றிருப்பதால், எனது சக பணியாளர்கள் அதிகாரிகளை அணுகவும், பல்வேறு தேவைகளுக்காக மனுக்களை சமர்ப்பிக்கவும் என்னால் உதவ முடிகிறது. சட்ட விழிப்புணர்வு ஒருங்கிணைப்பு குழுவிடமிருந்து நான் பெற்ற பயிற்சியின் மூலம் பல தொழிலாளர்களின் வாழ்க்கையில் மாற்றத்தை என்னால் ஏற்படுத்த முடிந்தது. இது எனது அழைப்பு என்பதை நான் உணர்கிறேன். எங்கள் சங்கத்தை வலுப்படுத்த நான் உறுதிபூண்டுள்ளேன்.
