I am C. Karuppasamy. I have been working as a manual scavenger for the past 10 years in a village, Sedapatti union, Madurai district. I have participated in several motivational and training sessions organised by the Madurai Legal Awareness Coordination Committee (MLACC). Slowly, I realized the importance of being part of Manual Scavengers Rights Association, facilitated by MLACC. The training sessions were highly useful to me, and I gained knowledge on the laws enacted for the protection and development of the manual scavengers, the government schemes, loans provided by TAHDCO, and the importance of registering myself under the Welfare Board and getting identity cards.

Three years ago, I was elected leader of the manual scavengers of the Sedapatti Union. I am proud to say that I have given a lead to help my union members access various benefits. Fifteen workers have received THADCO loans, and fifteen more have registered in the Welfare Department. I can feel that I am gaining confidence and growing in leadership qualities. I attribute all these changes to MLACC. Many of my colleagues call me ‘Thalaivar’. I am well recognized by my community members. They believe that I could help them to alleviate their suffering to some extent. For an uneducated person like me, MLACC has been a real gift.

நான் சி. கருப்பசாமி, மதுரை மாவட்டம் சேடப்பட்டி ஒன்றியத்தில் கடந்த 10 ஆண்டுகளாக துப்புரவு பணியாளராக பணி செய்து வருகிறேன். மதுரை சட்ட விழிப்புணர்வு ஒருங்கிணைப்புக் குழு நடத்திய பல ஊக்கமளிக்கும் பயிற்சி கூட்டங்களில் பங்கேற்று இருக்கின்றேன். இக்கூட்டங்களில் பங்கேற்பு செய்ததினால் சிறிதுசிறிதாக, துப்புரவு பணியாளர் உரிமை சங்கத்தின் முக்கியத்துவத்தை எளிதாக என்னால் உணர முடிந்தது. ஒவ்வொரு பயிற்சி கூட்டங்களும் எனக்கு மிகவும் பயனுள்ளதாக  இருந்தது. இப்பயிற்சியில் பங்கேற்றதன் விளைவாக துப்புரவு பணியாளர்களின் பாதுகாப்பு மற்றும் மேம்பாட்டிகாக இயற்றப்பட்ட சட்டங்கள், அரசின் நலத்திட்டங்கள், தாட்கோ வழங்கும் கடன்கள் மற்றும் நலவாரியத்தில் பதிவு செய்து அடையாள அட்டை பெறுவதன் முக்கியத்துவம் போன்றவற்றை பற்றி தெரிந்து கொண்டேன்.

மூன்றாண்டுகளுக்கு முன் சேடப்பட்டி ஒன்றியத்தின் துப்புரவு பணியாளர் உரிமை சங்கத்தின் தலைவராக தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டேன். சங்கத்தின் உறுப்பினர்கள் பல்வேறு நலத்திட்டங்களை பெறுவதற்கு நான் வழிகாட்டியாக இருந்ததை நினைத்து பெருமிதம் கொள்கிறேன். 15 நபர்கள் தாட்கோ கடனும், 15 நபர்கள் நலவாரிய அட்டையும் பெற்றுள்ளனர். நான் தன்னம்பிக்கை பெற்று தலைமைப் பண்புகளில் வளர்ந்து வருவதை என்னால் உணர முடிகிறது. என்னில் ஏற்பட்ட எல்லா மாற்றங்களுக்கும் மதுரை சட்ட விழிப்புணர்வு ஒருங்கிணைப்புக் குழு தான் காரணமாகும். என் சக பணியாளர்கள் பலர் என்னை “தலைவர்” என்று அழைக்கின்றனர். என் சமூக உறுப்பினர்களால் அங்கீகரிக்கப்பட்டவனாக இருக்கின்றேன். அவர்களின் துன்பத்தை தீர்க்க ஓரளவு என்னால் முடியும் என்று நம்புகிறார்கள். மதுரை சட்ட விழிப்புணர்வு ஒருங்கிணைப்பு குழு கிடைத்தது என்னை போன்று கல்வியறிவு இல்லாதவர்களுக்கு  ஒரு உண்மையாக பரிசாகும்.
