A safe place to teach our children!

The Kal Oddar Unit of IDEAS runs an Evening Study Centre at Kannagi Colony, Sivakasi, Virudhunagar District. About 40 children attend. The centre was run under a tree. The parents of the children work in menial jobs such as buying old clothes, collecting scrap materials, and repairing gas stoves.

Considering the safety and welfare of the children, we searched for a place in that area. We found a vacant Amma Clinic government building. As guided by the unit staff, two Evening Study Centre teachers went to the office of the Sivakasi MLA and submitted a petition to allow the study centre to be run at the vacant Amma Clinic. A staff member from the MLA’s office informed the Ward Member of Sivakasi Municipal Corporation Kannagi Colony.

The Ward Member handed over the keys of the Amma Mini Clinic building to the Evening Study Centre teachers. The building needed a thorough cleaning. The parents of the children, leaders of Itinerant People’s Rights and teachers came together and cleaned the place and did some renovation work.

On February 13, 2026, the centre was inaugurated by the District Juvenile Justice Board Member and Tamil Nadu Disability Rights Programme Sivakasi District Facilitator in the presence of the Sivakasi Municipal Ward Member. The centre is now functioning excellently.
