I am Udaiyar, and I have worked as a sanitation worker in Kusavankundu Panchayat under Thiruparankundram Union, Madurai District for the past 30 years. Last year, I retired. After retirement, I received my retirement settlement, and my monthly pension of ₹2,000 was credited regularly to my bank account. However, suddenly, the pension stopped coming for three consecutive months. When I approached the Panchayat Secretary, he dismissed my concern, saying that pension payments had been stopped for all retired sanitation workers and that I should simply wait. Later, I found that retired sanitation workers in neighbouring panchayats, as well as my relative in Virudhunagar district, were continuing to receive their monthly pensions without interruption. When I questioned the Secretary again, he became angry and threatened me.

At that time, members of the Madurai Legal Awareness Coordination Committee were visiting our panchayat and interacting with sanitation workers about welfare schemes and workplace issues. My wife, who also works as a sanitation worker, shared my problem with them. The team immediately visited my home, listened patiently to my situation, and explained that there was a legal way to resolve it. They guided me to submit a petition to the Madurai District Collector’s Office along with copies of my Aadhaar card, service records, and sanitation worker identity card. Since I did not know how to write a petition, they taught me how to write a simple petition. I wrote the petition. Following their guidance, I submitted the petition during the Monday public grievance meeting at the Collector’s Office.

Within a week, the Panchayat Secretary called me and informed me that my monthly pension would be credited regularly and that the pending three months’ pension would also be released. As promised, the arrears were credited to my bank account, and my pension has continued without interruption. I thank the Madurai Legal Awareness Coordination Committee.
