I was privileged to participate in the workshop on Safeguarding of Children and Protection of Women from Sexual Harassment in the Workplace, 2013, organised by the Safeguarding Committee of IDEAS. This was a timely workshop. About 54 of us, regular and project staff, participated. There were two resource persons: Prof. Dr. Kurshid Begam, St. Joseph’s College, Trichy and Mr. Prabhu, Member, Child Welfare Committee, Trichy District.

One of the resource persons mentioned that every police station has a children’s welfare officer. Their role is to visit institutions and villages within their station’s limits and conduct awareness sessions on the safeguarding of children. I was intrigued by this statement. I couldn’t believe this to be true. So, I asked, “Will such awareness sessions be conducted in all villages, either once a week or a month?” The resource person explained, “It does not happen systematically. On their way, the welfare officer will stop at a school or college, take a photograph with the children, and report as if awareness sessions were conducted. But if you request to come to your village, stating that you are working for children, they will come”. This was good news to me.

I have decided to invite officers from the police station and conduct awareness sessions in my village. I will do it soon.

அய்டியாஸ் மையத்தின் குழந்தைகள் மற்றும் பெண்கள் பாதுகாப்பு குழு ஏற்பாடு செய்திருந்த ‘பணியிடங்களில் பெண்களுக்கெதிரான பாலியல் துன்புறுத்தல் (தடுப்பு, தடை மற்றும் தீர்வு) சட்டம், 2013 சட்டம்’ குறித்த பயிற்சியில் பங்கேற்கும் வாய்ப்பு எனக்கு கிடைத்தது. இது சரியான நேரத்தில் நடந்த ஒரு பயிற்சி பட்டறையாகும். அய்டியாஸ் மையத்தின் பணியாளர்கள், திட்ட பணியாளர்கள் என சுமார் 54 பேர் இப்பயிற்சியில் பங்கேற்றோம். பேராசிரியர் டாக்டர் குர்ஷித் பேகம், செயின்ட் ஜோசப் கல்லூரி, திருச்சி மற்றும் திரு. பிரபு, உறுப்பினர், குழந்தைகள் நலக்குழு, திருச்சி மாவட்டம் ஆகிய இரண்டு பயிற்சியாளர்கள் இப்பயிற்சியை வழிநடத்தினர்.

‘ஒவ்வொரு காவல்நிலையத்திலும் ஒரு குழந்தைகள் நல அதிகாரி இருப்பார். அவரின் பணி காவல்நிலைய எல்லைக்கு உட்பட்ட நிறுவனங்கள் மற்றும் கிராமங்களுக்குச் சென்று குழந்தைகளின் பாதுகாப்பு குறித்த விழிப்புணர்வு அமர்வுகளை நடத்துவதாகும்’ என்று இப்பயிற்சியை வழிநடத்திய பயிற்சியாளர் கூறினார். அவர் கூறிய கருத்து எனக்கு புதிதாகவும், நம்ப முடியாத வகையிலும் இருந்தது. உடனே நான் ‘அனைத்து கிராமங்களிலும் வாரம் அல்லது மாதம் ஒருமுறை இதுபோன்ற விழிப்புணர்வு அமர்வுகள் நடத்தப்படுமா?’ என்று அவரிடம் கேட்டேன். அதற்கு ‘இது முறையாக நடப்பதில்லை. குழந்தைகள் நல அலுவலர் போகிறபோக்கில் ஒரு பள்ளி அல்லது கல்லூரியில் குழந்தைகளுடன் இருப்பது போன்ற புகைப்படம் எடுத்து, விழிப்புணர்வு அமர்வுகள் நடத்தப்படுவது போல் அறிக்கை அளித்துவிடுவார். ஆனால் நீங்கள் பணி செய்யும் கிராமங்களுக்கு விழிப்புணர்வு பயிற்சி கொடுக்க அழைத்தால் கண்டிப்பாக வருவார்கள்’ என்று கூறினார். இது எனக்கு நல்ல செய்தியாக இருந்தது.

நானும் இவ்வாறான விழிப்புணர்வு அமர்வை எங்கள் கிராமத்தில் நடத்த வேண்டும் என்று முடிவு எடுத்துள்ளேன். அதை விரைவில் செய்து முடிப்பேன்.
